Jetting off to Edinburgh

Our Dental Nurses will be jetting off to Edinburgh in September to take their final exams for the Oral Health Educator Course.
They have been studying long hours in preparation for this postgraduate course but are looking forward to sharing their newfound skills with the members of the Cool Clean Club, our innovative and fun programme for kids!

Your safety first

We have just invested in not one but two defibrillators. This is hospital standard equipment which is used for patients who suffer heart failure. They save lives by restoring the natural rhythm to the heart and are standard equipment for the police, fire and ambulance services. The practice has been trained in their use and has one for adults and the other for children and young people.

Gum disease ‘a warning light’

Patients who were here in September will know we were supporting World Heart Day with a “hearty smile” campaign. We did all we could to raise awareness of the link between gum disease and heart disease. (Did you know that bleeding gums are the most common warning light for diagnosis of several different medical conditions, including heart disease and diabetes?) We raised 350 Euros for the Irish Heart Foundation through the generosity of our patients and staff who took part in a sponsored walk on World Heart Day. If you weren’t involved this year, we do hope you will support us in 2011.

Bringing specialist services to you…

We are holding an open evening in the New Year when you can find out about the benefit of dental implants for replacing missing teeth. Our visiting periodontist Dr Maher Kemmoona will be here to tell you what is involved and answer your questions. Specialist dentists who provide implants are usually periodontists because of their skills and experience in treating gums. Most of Dr Kemmoona’s other patients travel to Dublin to have treatment but we get him to visit us in Carlow! We will be in touch with a date soon!

Enjoy your specialist dental treatments here with the dental team you know.

More specialist news

While on the subject we have three other visiting specialists: Oral Surgeon Muhammad Israr, Orthodontist Maghnus O’Donnell and Paediatric Specialist Aifric Ni ChaollaI.

Dr Israr is fully covered by private health insurers – so whatever kind of surgery is required, it can happen here in Carlow, courtesy of your insurer.

Thursdays are known as teeth straightening days because that’s when Maghnus our orthodontic specialist usually comes to visit.

Finally, Aifric provides treatment to children aged 16 and under. As a paediatric specialist, she has winning ways with our younger patients – we call it the magic of Aifric!
